Moderate Studio Website: A Pattern-Led Home for the Practice
Moderate Studio needed one place to hold sound, visual art and the shop together. In 2022 I designed and built moderate.studio around the repeating-pattern work that had run through the practice for years, turning the artwork itself into the identity.
One Home for the Practice
Moderate Studio covers a lot of ground: DJ sets and live sound, prints and paintings, commissions and self-initiated projects. For years those threads lived in separate places: social feeds, a shop, scattered project pages. The studio needed a single address that could hold all of it without flattening it into an off-the-shelf portfolio.
The brief I set myself was simple. The site had to feel like the work rather than like a bought theme. It had to introduce Mark Jermyn as an artist, DJ and designer, carry the sound and the visual practice side by side, and give the shop somewhere to live, all rooted in place, people and participation, the line the studio keeps coming back to.
Pattern as Identity
The starting point was the repeating patterns. I had been making them since the one69A days, screen-printing at Islington Mill, where colour and repetition first became central to how I work. Rather than treat them as decoration, I made them the identity itself.
The homepage is built from a grid of those pattern tiles, bold concentric waves in magenta, green, yellow and teal, sitting under a hand-drawn MODERATE.STUDIO wordmark and a small star logo. The same tiles carry the navigation out to sound and social: Instagram, Mixcloud and YouTube each get their own patterned panel, so the design system does the signposting instead of a plain menu.
Sound, Work and Shop
Behind the front page the site splits into the parts of the practice. Live Sounds gathers the DJ work: bookings, weddings and events, and the nights I play. Projects reads as an open archive rather than a tidy catalogue, pulling together two decades of exhibitions, prints, sound work and self-initiated activity, some pieces standing alone and some part of longer-running strands.
The Shop turns the artwork into something you can take home: pattern prints, canvases and one-off pieces like the Kath Kidston on Acid curtains. Keeping the shop inside the same site, under the same identity, meant the commercial side never felt bolted on.
Where It Sits Now
The 2022 site did its job. It gave Moderate Studio a coherent home and a clear voice at a point when the practice was spreading across sound, art and commissions. It has since been rebuilt. The site you are reading now is its successor, but the thinking carried straight over: let the work set the tone, keep sound and visuals in the same room, and build the identity out of the patterns rather than around them.
