From a print studio in Salford to a studio in the hills
The work has not changed much. The name over the door has, three times, and so has the view out of the window.
2007, Manchester School of Art
BA (Hons) Interactive Arts. The end of course exhibition was a large-scale installation of layered card forms, projection and live sound.
2009 to 2021, one69A
A hand screen-print studio run with Sally Gilford, first in the basement of Folk in West Didsbury and then at Islington Mill in Salford. It printed nearly everything else on this site.
2012 to 2023, Moderate Realism
The name I made art and design under. Paintings, prints, wallpaper, installations, murals and public pieces, made across Manchester and beyond.
From 2023, Moderate Studio
The practice took its current name, with Moderate Sounds as its music side.
From 2024, the house on the hill
A stone house in the Derbyshire hills, taken on in January 2024. An ongoing project of making, mending and building, and where a lot of my time goes now.
The names
Three names, one thread
Each one has its own record on this site, with the work made under it.
Questions
Common questions
Where are you based?
Buxton, in the Peak District. Most of the work is around Derbyshire, Manchester and Cheshire, and I travel further out when the job makes sense.
What do you actually do?
DJ sets, speaker and PA hire, websites, and print, pattern and installation work. One practice across sound and image.
What was one69A?
A hand screen-print studio at Islington Mill in Salford, run with Sally Gilford from 2009 to 2021, trading as Manchester Screen Printers and later Manchester Print and Distribution.
What was Moderate Realism?
The name I made art and design under from 2012 until 2023, when the practice became Moderate Studio.
What is Moderate Sounds?
The music side of Moderate Studio, and a DJ night I run myself, taking an eclectic, Balearic-leaning selection to a different venue for each date. I have designed a new poster for every date since 2024.
Do you work outside the Peak District?
Yes. Sound and visual work is usually around Derbyshire, Manchester and Cheshire, and further when it makes sense. Websites are not fussy about geography, so those can be anywhere.
