The system
Yamaha and Pioneer, run on the sun
The whole rig runs off a solar-charged battery, so there is nothing to plug into and nothing to fuel.

A pair of Yamaha DBR10 speakers and a Pioneer XDJ-AZ controller, powered by a solar-charged battery station with fold-out panels.
Charged by the sun
Fold-out solar panels charge the battery before the event and keep topping it up while the music plays.
A full set on a bright day
On good sun it holds a four-hour set with charge to spare, and extra storage can be added if the day is due to be grey.

First outing
The Flash village hall duck race
Its first proper outing was the Flash village hall duck race, a fully off-grid location with no generator backup at all. It ran a four-hour set start to finish, charged only by the sun, and worked perfectly. Bright day, full crowd, not a cable to the mains in sight.
Where it is headed
The bigger plan
This is the small version. The plan is to grow it into a solar-powered stage built into a shipping container, panels that fold out on site, dropped off the back of a truck and ready to power a proper set anywhere. Off-grid sound at a bigger scale, still running on nothing but sunshine.

Common questions
Is the sound system really powered only by the sun?
Yes. The battery power station is fully charged from solar panels before every event, so there is no generator and no mains connection needed on the day.
How long can it run at an event?
On a bright day it comfortably powers a four-hour set with charge to spare, and the panels keep topping the battery up while the music plays. Additional battery storage can be added for longer or cloudier days.
What size of event can it handle?
The current system is comfortable for events of up to around 200 people.
What happens if it is cloudy or wet?
The battery is fully charged from the sun beforehand, and extra battery storage can be provided if the forecast is grey, so the sound never depends on the weather on the day.
What areas do you cover?
Based in Buxton and covering the Peak District, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, with off-grid and field venues especially welcome.
What kinds of events is it for?
Weddings, ceremonies, garden parties, village fêtes, small festivals, wellbeing sessions, art openings and any off-grid venue with no power.
Can you DJ the event as well?
Yes. The system is delivered, set up and run by Mark Jermyn, who can DJ the set as part of the booking.
