Club Tragicana, the identity for a club night at Islington Mill in Salford, 2014. A hot pink logo with a palm tree and a tower block where the sun should be. A play on Club Tropicana with the holiday swapped for a Salford high-rise, sunshine and concrete in the same little badge.
The night was run by Islington Mill and the performance artist Louise Woodcock, who is sadly no longer with us. It was a mix of everything: music, performance art, bands and DJs, and a mixed crowd to go with it.
The tower block was Louise’s idea. It is Canon Hussey Court, the block that overlooks Islington Mill, and it was where she was living at the time. So the sun in the logo is her home, rising over the venue.
My part was the logo and the posters. The posters were printed digitally, and I screen printed a run of t-shirts with the logo on as well.
A lot of what happens at the Mill has a name and a look before it has anything else. Getting the joke into the logo, so the night has a face to put on a flyer, is a big part of putting a night on at all.
Part of the Islington Mill case study.
