The install that started it

Install three of the Refuge campaign went up in Levenshulme, the yellow cube pattern pasted onto a single bricked-up shop window near the market and the train station. At the time it was just another site in the nine-day run.

It turned out to be the one that mattered most. I was living in Levenshulme then, and someone connected to the derelict station nearby saw the wallpaper. That led to a conversation over coffee in a café round the corner.

The plan for the station was already clear. It was always going to be a community cycle café. What they were looking for was another member of the community who could bring something different to it: someone creative, business minded, and interested in building. They wanted help with everything.

That was the start of Station South. A guerrilla paste-up on a boarded window, and a building I would go on working on for years.

You never know which piece of work is the door.
