An outfit I made for Sounds From The Other City in 2016, a hooded suit in a soft pastel print topped off with a mirrorball for a head. A one-person disco walking around the festival, catching the light and throwing it back in little squares wherever it went.
The head was simple. I broke a mirrorball in half and fixed it to a cycle helmet.
The suit came from earlier work. The fabric was hand screen printed for an exhibition at the Soup Kitchen in the Northern Quarter, and afterwards I made a suit out of it.
On the day I was part of a big group that walked from venue to venue as a performance art piece, moving through the festival rather than stopping at any one stage. People took to it well.
It is the sort of thing the festival is made for, a costume with no purpose other than to turn up and be looked at. A mirrorball for a head, wandering Chapel Street on a bank holiday, which is its own small kind of public art.
Sounds From The Other City is a festival I know from the other side of the decks too. In earlier years I DJed there at Islington Mill.
Part of the Islington Mill case study.
