MILL TO MOOR
From Mill to Moor – The Migration of Sound
Overview
My practice brings together sound, space and audience experience across installation, exhibition and live contexts. Over time, this has included research-led sound and projection work, large-scale commissioned installations, long-term community-facing projects and ongoing live sound practice.
The proposed project builds on this trajectory by creating focused time for research-led experimentation with sound, space and composition.

Refuge Exhibition, Manchester (2016)
In 2016 I delivered a large-scale installation as part of the launch of Refuge, Manchester. The work was commissioned for a busy public hospitality environment and required responding to architectural scale, movement through space and a broad, non-specialist audience. Alongside the installation, I developed a small-scale, site-specific guerrilla marketing campaign that extended the work beyond the exhibition space and encouraged public discovery and engagement.
This project demonstrates experience of delivering ambitious work within complex public settings, working to commission briefs, and integrating creative practice, audience engagement and promotion within live, operational environments.

Manchester Art School – Sound & Projection Installation (2007)
This installation formed part of my end-of-course exhibition at Manchester Art School and combined projected visuals with sound to explore spatial relationships and audience perception.
Although created early in my practice, this work represents the foundations of my ongoing interest in sound, space and installation, and reflects a research-led approach to experimentation that continues to inform my work today.

Station South – Community-Led Creative Project (2017–present)
Since 2017 I have co-developed and delivered Station South, transforming a dilapidated, empty building into a community café and cultural space. This has involved securing significant funding, managing project delivery, overseeing public workshops and events, and balancing creative ambition with operational responsibility.
The project required ongoing risk management, including the use of a regularly updated risk register, and long-term planning across funding, programming and day-to-day operations. This experience directly informs my approach to planning, governance and delivery for the proposed project.

Recent Live Sound Practice – Buxton BreweryAlongside installation and project work, I maintain an active live sound practice as a DJ, regularly delivering weekly performances across venues in Derbyshire, Cheshire and Manchester. This ongoing work involves responding to different rooms, sound systems and audiences in live, social environments, and making real-time curatorial decisions that balance personal musical intention with the needs of the space and audience.
This recent performance at Buxton Brewery demonstrates current engagement with live sound systems, audience dynamics and responsive programming, grounding the proposed research in an active, real-world sound practice.

Developing the Work
Current research is focused on how sound migrates between industrial and rural contexts, and how listening practices shift when removed from their original environments. This includes exploring field recording, spatial sound and installation formats that respond to place, movement and audience presence.
Rather than producing a single outcome, the work is developing as a series of tests and iterations, allowing sound, space and context to inform each other over time.

Closing statement
Together, these examples demonstrate a long-term practice that combines sound, space, experimentation and public engagement. The proposed project builds on this existing work by supporting further research and development, allowing new ideas to be tested, refined and extended through mentoring and technical support.
